Donald Howard Johnson was born July 25, 1944 in Des Moines, Iowa to Donald and Dorothy (Williams) Johnson. He was educated in the Ankeny area. He was an avid athlete and letters in all sports. Donald proudly served in the U.S. Marines and had the opportunity to travel the world. He married Glenda Kay Duff on April 14, 1982 and was happily married for 32 years. He was previously married to Shirley Southers.

Donald had many talents and worked a variety of jobs. He loved being outside and was a true outdoorsman; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and animals. Donald liked reading and cooking barbeque. He will be remembered for his generosity and his huge heart, matched only by his huge smile. He was very outgoing and had the type of personality that could just draw you in. He was a true “Leo” and was very outspoken. He enjoyed a good conversation and could talk about any subject. Donald lived a very full life and loved his family as much as they loved him.

He passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015 surrounded by his loving family at the age of 70. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 20, also at Hamilton’s, with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Kay Johnson; children, Wesley Johnson, Angelique Johnson, Angelia (Rahsaan) Camp, and John (Alisa) Duff; 24 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; brother, Johnny Johnson of Illinois; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Dorothy; brother, Richard Johnson; and sister, Carol Crump.
