Gavin Granneman
September 15, 2007
Much-loved son, brother, uncle and friend, Gavin Ryan Granneman went to heaven on Saturday, September 15, after a car accident that also claimed the lives of 3 of his friends. Gavin was born on July 5, 1978 in Des Moines, Iowa to Sharon and Terry Granneman. Ten days later, Sharon died. Gavin is now with his birth mom.
Gavin graduated from Valley High School in 1996, attended DMACC, Graduated from Iowa Central Community College and attended Iowa State University.
Those left without him are his parents, Mary and Terry Granneman in Clive, brother Jamie and nephew Joey in Boulder, CO, sister Nicole Sparks (Mike), niece Macy, and nephew Trey in Golden, CO, grandmother Bernadine Granneman of Oelwein, and aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He loved participating in any and every athletic sport, from soccer to sand volleyball, basketball, snow skiing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, rollerblading, inline skating, shooting pool, snowboarding, swimming, diving, and this year, his first RAGBRAI. Gavin registered for the 2007 HyVee Triathlon 3 days before the event, and completed it just hours after his bar shift ended. Traveling lightly, holding no grudges, with a quick smile for all he met—that is his legacy.
He worked in many restaurants and bars in the Des Moines area and used his “flair” bartending skills to entertain himself and his customers.
“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” (John 14:34-35)
Gavin loved everyone he met. He was light and life and joy and laughter. He will be so missed!
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Gavin Granneman Memorial Fund.
Visitation will be at Hamiltons on Westown Parkway on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m., and a service celebrating Gavin’s life will be at Lutheran Church of Hope on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. .

I want you to know that I am so sorry for your loss. Gavin was so outgoing, with a huge heart and a free-spirit. He was a great friend to me. Gavin was always there for you when you needed him and he always brought a smile to my face. Whenever I saw him he would just smile and all my problems would disappear.
I just saw him Thursday night and we made plans to hang out on Sunday which unfortunately never got to be. However, I am thankful that I got to see him on Thursday and have the memories of that night. You should feel comfort to know that Gavin was a great person and I know a lot of people loved him. I will miss him so much and he will always be in my thoughts.
I pray that your family has the strength to get through this and be thankful for the 29 years you had with him. I have known Gavin for 2 years and he made those years wonderful, I can't imagine how wonderful he made your lives.

Mary and Terry,
It is hard to come up with words that can express our sadness and shock, over the loss of Gavin. I want you to know we have been thinking of you during this unimaginable time. I feel like I have been stuck since you called Saturday night. I will continue to pray for all of you, your family and friends. Gavin was an incredible person. He light up his surrounding, he was a bright light, a shining star. The only way I can even begin to understand why this happened is believing that God had a different plan for him. I don't know what it was, but I believe he will help others somehow. I pray that we can all cherish the memories of this wonderful son of yours. And I hope you can take comfort in knowing he was loved by many and touched so many lives. May God and your faith comfort you during this time of sorrow.
We love you,
Linda and Bob

Terry and Mary,
I am absolutely heartbroken for you. As a parent of two sons in their early 20's I can only imagine how overwhelming your loss must be. Even though I did not personally know Gavin, having the two of you as parents would lead me to believe that he was a wonderful young man who loved people, laughter, and lived life to the fullest.
I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please know that you are loved and supported beyond what you can only imagine and I hope you can draw strength from that and can find peace in the time to come.
