Gary Lee Merkley

Gary L. Merkley, 66, died Friday, February 21, 2014 at his home in Mesa, Arizona. He was born March 16, 1947 to Samuel and Dorothy Merkley in Des Moines.

Gary graduated from Tech High School in 1965 and served in the Army from 1966 through 1968. He retired from the US Postal Service as a letter carrier after 35 years of service.

Gary is survived by his sons, Curt (Penny) Haywood of Tipton, Chris (Joan) Haywood of West Des Moines, Brent (Lori) Merkley of Waukee, Brian (Holly) Merkley of St. Charles, and Greg (Michelle) Fuqua of Ames; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Ann) Merkley; and a host of other family and beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; and brother, John.

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to service time at the funeral home.
