John honorably served 6 years in the Army, including 2 tours in Vietnam. He worked as a cook for 18 years taking great pride in his ability to make everything from scratch until he lost his vision in 1995. He enjoyed talking with others, while making as many friends as possible.
John was preceded in death by both his parents.
He is survived by his four brothers; and eight sisters.
His burial wish was to be laid to rest beside fellow veterans.
Visitation will be held, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Graveside Service to follow at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
Memorial Contributions may be made to American Cancer Society in loving memory of John.

I am one of John's sisters. John and I had the same Dad. I met John for the first time when I was 18, John was home on leave from the Army.
Whenever he came to visit, I enjoyed talking to him, he had a good sense of humor. He was also a very good person.
Our children remember what a good cook he was.
I have many good memories.

I am one of Johns sisters , I just found out that he passed . My Dad is Johns Dad also...I met John for the first time when I was 13 as I remember it he came to our house when he was on leave from the service . We got to know each other through the years as he would come to North Dakota and live off and on through the years . As I remember I was pretty shy when I first met him ,but through the years got to know him . He was a good cook made the best chicken and fun to talk to , we enjoyed the same kind of music. I will miss him , God Bless !

Brother you were there many times in my growing up. Protecting me from bullies in school to Dad at home I never forgot and want you to know I never will forget. Love You and miss you.
