Donald J. Young

Donald J. Young, Sr., 67, died Monday, September 16, 2013, at Lutheran Hospital.

Don was born November 12, 1945, in Des Moines, to Virgil and Ester Young. He loved hanging out with his friends and was always on the go, having fun. He loved making people laugh, cussin’, and telling jokes or old stories. Don was a racing fan and raced sprint cars as a team with his son, Danny, who preceded him in death in 1995.

Don loved growing tomatoes and giving them away to everyone. He also enjoyed watching his son, Donny grow giant pumpkins. He enjoyed hunting ducks and geese and coon hunting with his son, Ronny. He also liked fishing in years past.

Don was a family man and loved spending time with his grandkids. He liked going to Prairie Meadows and enjoyed logging and was owner of Young’s Tree Service.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Danny, and seven siblings. He is survived by his wife, Roberta; children, Ronny (Julie) and Don, Jr. (Julie); grandchildren, Ryan, Lindsey, Nicole, and Ashley; great-grandchildren, Danny and Dallas; sisters, Virginia, Linda, Donna, and Edith; and brother, Bill (Betty).

There will be a public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 20, also at the funeral home.
