Service Details

Jacqueline “Jackie” (Brewer) Genovese passed away peacefully from congestive heart failure on September 9, 2013 at the age of 88 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, with her loving children at her side.

Jackie was born in Des Moines, Iowa on May 9, 1925 to Robert and Bertha Brewer. She attended Lincoln High School. On August 17, 1948 she married Jack A. Genovese from Des Moines and began her life’s eventful journey that included raising five children. They moved their family to Ankeny, Iowa in 1958. As a result of her husband’s career with Firestone, they lived inJolliette, Quebec, Canada and Albany, Georgia before moving back to Des Moines. Together they also spent some wonderful retirement years in Florida.

Jackie knew no strangers and was friendly to everyone she met. That is what made her so beautiful – inside and out. She was a loving mother and dedicated her time to various activities involving her children. She was a leader for Cub Scouts, Blue Birds and 4-H, instilling great commitment values in her children. Jackie was a great champion for all of her children and grandchildren over the years, always supporting their efforts with positive reinforcement. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember her as a kind and gentle spirit.

Jackie also had a passion for repurposing old things and giving them new life. Nothing was ever thrown away as she never knew when she could use it again. Her favorite pastime was to go “junking” at thrift stores and garage sales, always looking for that unique item to add to her collection. She loved antiques and over the years she owned and sold many pieces of furniture and dishes. Her favorite color was blue so it was no surprise that her home was filled with a variety of blue and white dishes and vases.

Jackie was preceded in death by her husband Jack, daughter Kathy, her parents, Robert and Bertha Brewer, her brother, Robert Brewer, Jr, and grandson, Todd Genovese. She is survived by her children, Steven (Roseann) Genovese of Ankeny, Craig (Charlie) Genovese of Cima, California, Jacque Genovese of Norfolk, Nebraska, and Tom (Yvette) Genovese of Boone, Iowa; her grandchildren, Michelle (David) Sandquist, Kristine (Travis) Genovese-Sweet, Kim Genovese, Troy (Jenny) Genovese, Tia Natalie Tomlinson, Eric Genovese and Nick Tomlinson; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial contributions be directed to The Animal Rescue League. We wish to express our deep gratitude to the many caregivers at Mercy Hospital, Mercy Hospice and Scottish Rite Center for their compassionate care during our mother’s brief illness.

Visitation will be at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. A private ceremony will be held to inter her ashes at McDivitt Grove Cemetery.
