Jim Hamblet, 70, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Bright Kavanagh House.
Jim was born March 22, 1943, in Russell, Kansas. He spent his early years in western Kansas where he graduated from Fort Hays State Kansas College in 1966. Upon graduation, Jim joined the U.S. Navy and served two years on the USS Kearsarge aircraft carrier, and two years in Saigon, Republic of Vietnam.
After his discharge, Jim moved to Kansas City where he joined the Internal Revenue Service. While in Kansas City, he met the love of his life, Marie Kane. They were married on April 8, 1972. From this marriage two of the most beautiful, wonderful, smart and witty daughters, who were more than a father could ask for, were born.
Jim is survived by his daughters, Angela Black of Mitchelville and Shannon (Mike) Hanley of Portland, Maine; granddaughters, Gretchen and Beatrice of Portland, Maine; sister, Julia Tuttle of Oakland, California; and his brother, Brad Hamblet of Alma, Kansas.
Per Jim’s request, his body was donated to Des Moines University. A reception in Jim’s honor will be held at Terrace Hills Golf Course Clubhouse, 8700 NE 46th Avenue in Altoona, from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, May 19, 2013.
Jim was grateful for the care he received at Bright Kavanagh House, where he asked memorial contributions be made in his memory.

We lost a great friend and golf buddy in Jim. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to family. We'll meet you on the first tee at the best golf course ever. R.I.P. Jim.
