Robert W. Calland, 74, passed from this life on July 4, 2007 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Robert worked for 43 years at Firestone Tire and Rubber in Des Moines. He enjoyed working and often took extra shifts to help provide for his family. He enjoyed working and always had a second job, many years at S&J Marine. His love of motors and fixing things always made his hobby his second Job.
Robert served his country in the Army during the Korean War as an Artillery Survey Specialist. He was proud to be a veteran, and was a member of the American Legion Post 374. He was also a lifelong member of the NRA, the Isaak Walton League, UAW Local 310 and a member of SOAR – Firestone’s retiree club. Robert loved hunting and fishing and took great joy in bringing home his many trophies. Robert enjoyed working, loved being able to provide for his family, not only the essentials but as many perks as he could. He was proud to be able to fund college educations for his three children. He was the pillar of the family and will be missed beyond words.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Doris, his two daughters Cheryl (Richard) Voyek and Kimberly (Kelly) Carlson, five grandchildren, Robert (Kristy) Calland, Mark Voyek, Brittany and Brock Carlson and Sara Calland and one great-grandchild, Sebastian. He is also survived by his brother William (Irene) Calland and his sister Gwendolyn (Melvin) Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Brian W. Calland.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. Burial will take place in Lincoln Cemetery, Granger, Iowa. Visitation with family present will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. There will be a luncheon following graveside services at the Miller Park Shelter House in Polk City, IA
Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston and Isaak Walton League.
