Clyde Roeske

Clyde J. Roeske, age 82, went home to be with his Friend, Jesus, on Thursday, February 7, 2013, at the Marshalltown Medical Surgical Center in Marshalltown, IA. He was born on February 6, 1931, in Rogers City, Michigan, to Arthur and Lydia Roeske.

Clyde grew up in Rogers City, the fifth child in a family of seven. Some of his fondest memories were of fishing and swimming near the Trout River Dam. His family was a branch of the Roeske family who homesteaded in the hills of Moltke Township in the northern lower peninsula of Michigan, near Lake Huron. Clyde enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, before finishing high school.

Upon his return from service he met and married the love of his life, Muriel A. MacDonald, on December 8, 1951, and began his career with Presque Electric Cooperative, first as a lineman for rural electric customers, and later attaining the position of staking engineer. Clyde and Muriel built a small home on M-68 Hwy and over the years expanded their house, their property, and their family.

Family and friends were very important to Clyde and he was often known for going the extra mile to help others in his work and daily life. Faith Assembly of God was his church home from its earliest roots and he worked tirelessly to help, including the building of the new church on a hill. In his retirement, he attended churches in Cheboygan, MI, Onaway, MI, and at the Iowa Veterans Home. Clyde loved to plant and grow things, from berries to trees, and flowers of all kinds. He had an artistic eye for landscaping and design, with attention to detail.

In 2004, Clyde achieved his lifelong dream of high school graduation, and always encouraged his kids and grandkids to work hard and get a good education. Following struggles with health issues, Clyde moved to Iowa where he became a resident of the expansive Iowa Veterans Home. His passion for planting, art work, and helping others continued to thrive even as his health declined.

Clyde is preceded in death by his parents and all 6 of his siblings.

He is survived by his loving wife, Muriel Roeske of Altoona, IA; children, Mary Lynn (Mickey) Carvour of Altoona, IA, Connie (Cody) Cook of Alexander, AR, David (Patty) Roeske of Kendallville, IN, and Tim (Susan) Roeske of Ypsilanti, MI; grandchildren, Erin (Troy) Redfield of Plainwell, MI, David Lee (Ashley) Roeske of Plainwell, MI, Martha Carvour of Dallas, TX, Matthew Carvour of Altoona, IA, Deanna Roeske of Annapolis, MD, Colleen Roeske of Ypsilanti, MI, and Jacob Roeske of Kendallville, IN; and great-grandchildren, Aidon Redfield and Ethan Roeske, both of Plainwell, MI.

The family will have a private memory gathering on Monday, February 11, followed by a short visitation and 2:00 PM special memorial service for his friends at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, IA. A second memorial will take place in Rogers City, Michigan, in the spring for family and friends in his home town.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family, at 201 7th Street NW, Altoona, IA, to be used toward special memorials in his name for the Marshalltown Medical Surgical Center and Iowa Veterans Home.
