Service Details

Elva May Olson, 94, of Polk City, died January 22, 2013. She was born May 28, 1918, to Charles and Della Crannell. She was the youngest of five children. She married Orville Olson in 1935, and together they had three daughters, Cheryl, LuAnn, and Janice. They made their life together in Polk City, Iowa.

Elva worked at the Ordinance Plant in Ankeny during World War II. She was a loyal
American Legion Auxiliary member, acting as Past President for Post 232. She retired in 1983 from Iowa State University Research Lab as a Lab Technician.

Elva loved dancing. In her younger days, she and husband, Orville went dancing at the Lake Robbins Ballroom. She also enjoyed bird watching, cats, reading and painting her nails.

Elva adored her grandchildren. She had an endless supply of pop and candy bars readily available to spoil them with. Elva was a very giving person and would help anyone in need. She enjoyed making fudge, popcorn, and homemade jelly which she often shared with her neighbors.

We would like to thank our friends at Karen Acres and Iowa Hospice for the care and compassion our mother received.

Elva is survived by her daughters, Cheryl and Bob Hoeg of Des Moines, and Janice Bragg and Jim Byal of Mingo; grandson, Bradley White; granddaughters, Stephanie Underwood and Samantha Bragg; seven great-grandchildren, Jenna, Miranda, Christopher Jr., Kassandra, Caden, Juell, and Julian; sister, Dorothy of Altoona; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; daughter, LuAnn Olson; grandson, Christopher White; brother, LaVerne; and sisters, Letha and Verva.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 26, 2013, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with burial to follow at Polk City Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
