Nora Newman, 92, passed away Monday, November 26, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. She was born May 11, 1920, in Freeborn County, Minnesota, daughter of William and Belva (Russ) Patschke.
Nora served in the United States Army for three years as a nurse until her honorable discharge in 1946. She worked for the Veterans Administration in Des Moines, retiring in 1980. She was a member of Iowa Unit WBCCI and Highland Park Lutheran Church.
Nora is survived by her loving husband of 62½ years, Harold; daughters, Jodi (Rick) Purviance and Diane (Ken) Vanderpool; grandchildren, Stacia (Bryan) Smith, Chris (Ashley) Vanderpool, and Melissa (Matt) Beals; as well as six great-grandchildren, Raychel, Clayton, Ryk, Thayer, Matthias, and Matijs.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, November 29, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Highland Park Lutheran Church in loving memory of Nora.

I enjoyed talking with your mom when we were up there. She was a special lady and will be missed by everyone! Remember the wonderful memories you've had with her.

Mrs Newman was one of my first supervisors on the night shift at the VA in 1974. You can imagine how scarey it was for a new grad on nights. Mrs Newman was so helpful and supportive! I stayed 36 years and retired a couple of years ago. I'm grateful for her help back then and wanted you to know
