Judith Lewis

Judith Irene Lewis, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, August 20, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 23, 2012, at Wakonda Christian Church, 3938 Fleur Drive, followed by a private burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Des Moines. The family will receive visitors from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., prior to the funeral service.

Judy was born on November 11, 1940, in Des Moines, Iowa, to William and Evelyn Shadley. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1959 and attended classes at Drake University. She married her high school sweetheart, Jeff Lewis, in 1961, and they were blessed with two sons, Andy and Jon. Thereafter, Judy earned her real estate license, and for many years she and Jeff owned and operated Universal Realty on Des Moines’ south side.

Judy was an active and devoted member of Wakonda Christian Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and sewing, and created beautiful gifts for family and friends. She was an accomplished tole painter, an avid gardener, and an excellent cook. She especially loved planning festive holiday dinners for her extended family, and spending time with her beloved grandchildren.

Judy will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her tender heart and her deep love of family. Her sunny outlook and compassion for others touched all who met her. In her own gentle way, she never failed to encourage, support, and inspire those around her. To those she held dear, she will forever remain a guardian angel.

Judy is survived by her son Andy Lewis (Jennifer), son Jon Lewis; grandson Jack Lewis; granddaughter Abby Lewis; sister-in-law Linda Grandquist; sister-in-law Sharon Crees (Forrest), nieces Christine Crees, Melinda Ellwanger (James), Sheryle Stephens (Lynn), and Carrie Henderson (Jason), and many great-nieces and -nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Lewis; father, William Shadley; mother, Evelyn Shadley; brother, Billy Shadley; and an infant sister.
