She is survived by her brother, Michael (Merlyn) and niece, Melinda; step-mother, Marian Moore; step-sisters, Joy Gappa, Denise Fetters, Annie McCormick, and Darcy Olson; step-brother, Lee Deal; many aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Denise was a special childhood friend in our neighborhood in Des Moines on Grandview. We stayed in touch when our family moved to Colorado in 1973 but lost touch after I moved from Colorado to California in 1990. I've thought of her often. I'm so glad that she led such a full life. RIP Denise.

Denise has been a dear and valued friend of mine since I first met her on the sky-walk, while working for Principal Residential Mortgage downtown, from 1990- 2004. Since I left employment downtown in 2005, we have stayed in touch as best we could.
Over the years, we have shared M & M's, stories, meals, laughs, tears, dreams, joys and predictions. She brightened my days with her consistent and enduring faith and her positive spirit towards whatever life sent her way. Her laugh and her voice made an indelible impression on my memory. As much as I will miss seeing her from time to time and catching up, I'm thrilled she is now enjoying the presence of her Creator. I'm sure He greeted her with "Well done, my good and faithful servant". My thoughts and prayers are with Denise's family and friends.

Your family has my deepest sympathy in the loss of Denise. I knew Denise when through our work at Principal. It was always a joy to interact with her. Her smile, positive attitude, and enthusiasm were contagious. This poem by Isabel Norton is one of my favorites....and I think it reflects the gifts each of us received from Denise.
Those we hold most dear never truly leave us...
They live on in the kindnesses they showed...
The comfort they shared...
And the love they brought into our lives.
Please count me among the many people holding you and your family in their thoughts and prayers.

I met Denise in Younkers Rehab at Methodist Hospital when we were both there the end of 1997 after I was paralyzed in a car accident. Denise was one of the first people that taught me that you can't let what life deals you hold you back. She was so funny and a joy to be around, exactly what I needed in those first weeks and months of a major life change. I hadn't seen her for quite a long time until a couple summers ago when I saw her at the Iowa State Fair. She didn't recognize me at first but as soon as I reminded her she immediately began talking about our time in the hospital together all over again. As many people as she met and befriended, she seemed to remember everyone! She will be truly missed and I am so glad I got the chance to know her!

Dear Michael and Family,
I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Denise last week. Denise and I met in kindergarten at Smouse, and were friends from that moment on. She was my very best friend in the world and I was so blessed by God to have her friendship. I will always remember her laughter, and the good times we had when we were together, especially when went to Las Vegas. Unfortunately we didn't correspond much the last few years, and therefore lost contact with one another, but I believe we will meet again in heaven. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, that God will give you comfort and strength in your sorrow. My comfort in this time of loss is that Denise was my best friend and there will never be another like her. I hope her passing was a peaceful one.
Sincerely,
Angela Serra

Marian, I don,t know if you remember me, but I was your neighbor on Fleming. Denise came several times to interact with my classes at Urbandale. She was so invigorating and sparkling. The 7th graders enjoyed questioning her and sensing her attitude and listening to her laughter. I loved her and will miss her. My sympathy and prayers are with you

As the grandparent of a child with OI, my husband and I both quickly recognized that Denise shared the same disabiltiy as our "little but mighty" 8 year old when we saw her picture in the DM Register. The condolences here are filled so many things typical of our granddaughter from the giggles, to her determination, to zipping around in the wheel chair. Wish my granddaughter could have known Denise for she would have been a great inspiration and role model. Bless her heart as she walks with the Lord, and dances the night away with no pain. May precious memories comfort you until you meet your beloved sister again.

Denise's spirit was always vital. She loved life and never allowed her OI to define her abilities. Over the years we became close friends. She taught ADA to some of my real estate classes and afterwards we ate lunch at B'Bops or Sonic. She loved Sonics. Denise loved to talk on the phone. It was her lifeline. As a friend you listened and listened and listened. She had a heart the size of Ohio and loved her Lord. She was very special person and I'm happy that she's now free from here wheelchair and with her parents and best friend, Laurie. Bye dear friend. Tim

I first met Denise my sophomore year at Tech threw my friend Joanna. With the sever handicap and just losing her mother, she was the most up beet person, happy person I knew. She knew everyone and everyone knew her.
Denise, Joanne, Tim Galvin and I would all pale together going to games, clubs, and outside actives. Denise and I were in similar core groups so I did have the opportunity to leave 5 minutes early to take her to the next class using the coveted elevator at Tech. We became great friends and spent time in the summer going to places, mostly were Denise wanted to go. I remember once she invited me to go to Chicago to get a check up at Shriners Children Hospital. We went to the airport and boarded a private plane and flew in for the day. That was the first time I was on a plane! She was the old pro. When we got there she was so excited to show me her 2nd home introducing me to the doctors and nurses that took care of her during her earlier in her life.
After graduation, I moved to the Chicago area. We would stay in touch with phone calls and visits when I would come back to Des Moines or she would come to Chicago to visit me. When I brought my to-be husband home to meet the family, I also had to get Denises permission! After marriage, ever 3 day weekend we would have, Denise comes for a visit. We once lived in a 4th floor walk up apartment and my husband would take her up the 4 flights of stars. After having children and both having busier lives that came to an end and I would just see her when I came to Des Moines.
Through the 30 plus years I have know her, she never complained about the cards she was dealt. Her faith in God was so strong. She really took 2nd Corth. 12:9 to heart
My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christs power may rest on me.
I will miss you Denise but I know you are dancing in heaven now with your mom and dad.

I love the part of her obituary that said she went to walk with her Lord. How wonderful to think of her doing just that right now. She was a bright ray of sunshine in this life and will be missed. She was so cheerful and loved to laugh. I always enjoyed visiting with her. My heart goes out to her family who I know will miss her. Our lives were blessed by her presence.
