Virginia Meier

Virginia “Ginny” Beverly “Meier, 76, passed away peacefully at Taylor House Hospice, surrounded by her family and friends on Thursday, January 19, 2012. She was born Virginia Beverly Sowers on February 11, 1935, in Des Moines.

Ginny was a homemaker and a very devoted mother of eight children. Her lifelong passion was family and music. She was an accomplished musician and vocalist for 50-plus years in the Des Moines area. Her fellow musicians became lifelong friends. She loved being on stage with her sisters, children and beloved husband Gary. She also loved to entertain family and friends in her backyard and friends and family were always more than willing to accommodate her. Ginny enjoyed boating, camping and motorcycle riding, however, she preferred driving.

Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Meier; mother, Ruby Duncan; father, Wayne Sowers; infant son, Lauren Keith Meier; sisters, Patty Sue Franklin and AlitaDell Yelnick; and step-daughter, Robin. She is survived by her sons, David (Deanna) Heathcote, Danny (Jill) Heathcote, Joe (Angie) Meier; Dave (Pam) Meier, Kelly (Sue) Heathcote, Darron (Carmen) Heathcote and Gary (Lori) Meier; sisters, Joan Reintz, Toni (Paul) Burnholtz, Vicki (Bob) Godar and Dixie (Gary) Buecksler; brother, Wayne (Tina) Sowers; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she greatly adored.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m., Sunday, January 22, 2012, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Glendale Cemetery.
