Marie I. Smith
December 02, 2011
Marie I. Smith, 67, passed away on December 2, 2011. The family will greet friends on Sunday, December 4, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with a prayer at 7 p.m.
Marie was born in Elma, Iowa on September 28, 1944 to Veronica (Polansky) and Henry Smith and graduated from New Hampton High School. Most of her career was spent caring for children, her own and those of others. She operated an in-home daycare for many years while her daughters were growing up. Marie was devoted to her family and she always put them first. As a single parent family times were tough, but the family found joy in simple pleasures. They didn’t have a car, but they found great joy in walking together to the store or to the A&W for a treat. Marie knew how to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.
Another great joy for Marie was the birth of her two sets of twin grandchildren in the same week. How many people can say they went from 2 to 6 biological grandchildren in one weeks’ time? Family was extremely important to Marie.
In later years, Marie worked for the New Hampton Community Hospital, a Mercy Hospital affiliate, and Mercy Hospital in Des Moines in the Environmental Services area.
Marie will be greatly missed by her daughters, Angela (Ivan) Steinlage and Jennifer Krome; grandchildren, Jacob, Nicholas and Ryan Steinlage, and Jimi, Kimberlee and Cooper Krome; sisters, Margaret George, Jeanette Dickhoff, Susan Miller and Teresa Klobassa; and brother Henry W. Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Monica.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Angie and Jenny,
We are thinking about you during this time. Your mother was a great person and she had two great kids. We always enjoyed her watching the girls and she was a very loving and caring person. Dean said that he will always remember the little brown house next door. Cherish your memories. With sympathy.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the girls and the rest of Marie's family. We lived about a mile from the Smith family. Attended OLOL with Marie for 8 years. There were only five of us in the class. Then we rode the same bus for 4 years to New Hampton in a class of 100 students. Marie was always true to her cause. She never spent time complaining about people or things. She would just smile. May the good Lord guide all of you in the future to live out the memory of Marie.

Thinking of you during this time. I just read about your mom's passing. She was my daughter's (Ashley Deetz) babysitter when you lived on North Linn in New Hampton. Remember all of the memories you had with her. With our deepest sympathy, Deb Thorne & Ashley Deetz.
