Signe R. Olson

Signe Juliet (Rustwick) Olson, long-time resident of Des Moines, passed on September 9, 2011. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 66 years, Eugene Oliver Olson, whom she married June 15, 1938; they were blessed with two sons, Dennis and David. Signe was a cherished friend of many. The joys of her life were her family, church, and volunteer work. “Loving service” was her motto.

Signe was born in Sioux City, IA on October 17, 1915, to Sivert and Ella (Svensen) Rustwick. Her family included two brothers & sisters-in-law, Elmer & Florence Rustwick (both deceased), and Stewart & Marcia Rustwick of Sioux City IA, and their families.

Her son Dennis Olson and his wife Christine live in St. Joseph, PA; their daughters (Signe’s grandchildren) are Cynthia and Jennifer. Cynthia and husband Robert Huss live in Kingsport, TN with their daughters (Signe’s great-grandchildren) Linore and Jana Huss. Jennifer and husband Thomas Wahlund live in Indiana, PA.

Signe’s son David Olson and his wife Darlene live in Euless, TX; their children (Signe’s grandchildren) are Adele (deceased) and Mitchell Olson of Hurst, TX.

Signe’s church activities at Central Lutheran Church, and later at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, included Bell Choir, Adult Choir, Sunday School, Home Builders, Pioneers, and WELCA. Her volunteer work included Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary, Luther Park Auxiliary, Sons of Norway, and the Des Moines Women’s Club.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 23 at 1:00 p.m., at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, 511 Des Moines Street, Des Moines IA 50309. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Capitol Hill Lutheran Church. As per Signe’s wishes, her body has been donated to Des Moines University.
