Bruce James Mundy
September 23, 2009
Bruce James Mundy, 48, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Bruce was born on October 17, 1960 in Dodge Center, Minnesota to Albert and Carol Mundy. He grew up in Hayfield, Minnesota and graduated from Hayfield High School in 1979. Bruce was married to Nancy Simonson of Hayfield for twenty five years. He enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 18 and served on active duty for nine years. After separation, he was hired as a full-time employee with the Iowa Air National Guard. During his thirty-year military career, he was deployed numerous times in support of various conflicts including Operation Iraqi Freedom. Among his numerous awards, he was selected as Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year.
Bruce is survived by his daughter Brianne of San Diego; son Nathan (Anna) of Des Moines; girlfriend Lisa Woodring of Adel; five brothers Lee (Ruth) of Tacoma, Washington, Eldon (Susan) of Federal Way, Washington, Larry (Carol) of Dodge Center, Minnesota, Steve (Barbara) of San Diego, and Dennis (Lisa) of Mantorville, Minnesota; three sisters Deanna Schwering of Penrose, Colorado, Venita (Timothy) Schwantes of Auburn, Washington, and Brenda (Pat) Marchwick of Owatonna, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
On a more personal note, it'd be hard to find a man who lived life as full as Bruce did. He loved traveling, drinking good beer, listening to good tunes, riding his Harley, and was always up for a good adventure. Of course, he never did any of it without his friends and family. He was the best father two kids could ask for. We miss him dearly.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2009 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral services with full military honors will be held on Monday, September 28, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the 132nd Fighter Wing, 3100 McKinley Avenue, Des Moines.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be directed to the Bruce J. Mundy Memorial Fund c/o Timothy Cochran, 132nd Fighter Wing, 3100 McKinley Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa 50321. The memorial fund will go toward Iowa Honor Flights, which flies WWII veterans to the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Though it has been many years, we remember the many Lincoln games with Bruce cheering the kids on. Our deepest sympathy for your loss.

Today we lost a hero
why did he have to pay
he fought for our freedom
in lands so far away
his blood is on the hands
of a thief who drove a truck
we all know his life was worth much more
than that twenty seven bucks

Godspeed my friend

Each of you are in our thoughts and prayers. Although this was unexpected please have comfort in knowing that Bruce was chosen by GOD to do a mission that none of us are ready for. He is with GOD and what a comfort that should be to you. Take care. From two friends, two comrades and two members of the 132nd Fighter Wing. God Speed
