Brigadier General Neal Richard Christensen

Retired U-S Army Brigadier General Neal Richard Christensen, 85, passed away January 10, 2021, in Daphne, Alabama, into God’s love.

Neal was born February 18, 1935 in Humboldt, Iowa to the late Chris and Amelia (Holden) Christensen. The youngest of five children.


He graduated from Humboldt High School and the University of Iowa (GO HAWKS).
Neal leaves behind the legacy of a U-S Army career spanning two tours of combat in Viet Nam, service with the National Military Command Center, The U-S Army War College and eventually he was appointed by Governor Terry E. Branstad in 1985 as Deputy Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard, where he served from 1985 through 1989.

Following his retirement, Neal served both God and community by his leadership in the Sun City, Arizona, Presbyterian Church and the Okoboji, Iowa, City Council.

Although predeceased by his brothers, sisters and his loving wife, Kaye (Fredericksen), he is survived by his wife, Sara (VanOosterhout) Daphne, AL; son, Steve (Suzan), Fairhope, AL; Hannette Hang, Ozark, AL; grandchildren: Samuel, Galveston, Texas; Stefanie Francisco, (Jim) Montgomery, AL; Amelia Pendleton (J.P.), Auburn, AL; Eric Hang, Atlanta, GA; and great-grandchildren: Evangeline, Alexa, and Raelyn. Neal is also survived by a nephew in Johnston, IA, Robert H. Christensen, II. Neal’s love of Humboldt, Iowa and the Okoboji area along with his squadron of nieces, nephews, and family was always close to his heart.

Plans are underway for a memorial service at the Fairhope United Methodist Church in Fairhope, Alabama. Additionally, the family will announce in the future a Celebration of Life in the Okoboji/Spirit Lake, Iowa area.
