Juanita Naomi Brown (Johnson) was born July 26, 1946 in Des Moines, IA. The daughter of Carriebell Johnson and Manuel Weaver. Juanita was raised in Des Moines and a graduate of Des Moines East High School and Des Moines Area Community College. Throughout Juanita’s life she was involved in many community organizations and councils and had a deep passion for educational pursuits. She never let her limitations hinder her nor did she use her disability as an excuse not to be involved. A few organizations she was actively involved in were the Iowa Developmental Disability Council, Peer Advocates, Iowa Democratic Party, and Toastmasters just to name a few.

Juanita accepted her faith as a devout Catholic for many years and later became a member of Bethel AME Church of Des Moines. Our mother/grandmother laid a strong foundation for faith and family! We have never met anyone with such a strength of character and courage, with all she endured throughout her life she never complained. No words could ever express what she poured into her son, daughter and granddaughter and the many treasured friendships she had.

Juanita leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Karen Machell Brown of Atlanta, GA; son, Ramon Dontae Brown McCarrell (Erica Carter) of Des Moines; a special granddaughter, Stephanie Lynn Burkett; God-grandson, Carter White; sister-in-law, Ruth Johnson; nephew, Harold Johnson, Jr.; special niece, Kimberly Johnson (Jacqueline, TJ and Cameron) of Pontiac MI; three cousins, Pamela Collier and Jessie Raleigh of Des Moines and Hazel Lacey of Houston TX; and a host of family and friends that cared deeply for her. Preceding her in death are her aunt, Frances Collier; brother, Harold F. Johnson, Sr.; her parents and grandparents.

The family would like to express special thanks to the doctors and nurses of Mercy Medical Center, Associates in Nephrology and ManorCare Health who have cared for our mother over the years. A special “thank you” to Bethel AME for continuing visits and communion which meant so much. Lastly, the numerous friends and neighbors who always looked out for our mother.
