Service Details

Sandi Jan Porter (Sammie) age 76 passed away at her home on November 29, 2020. She was born on July 30th 1944 to Bernard
and Phinney Vandermeulen.

Sandi grew up in Urbandale, and went to Urbandale High School. She played 6 on 6 basketball. To Sandi, 6 on 6 was the only way to play basketball for girls and 5 on 5 was for boys. Sandi was very ‘spirited’ letting everyone know that that was how it was supposed to be. :)

After graduation, she went to work in the actuarial department at Central Life. Then later on, working part time at the courtesy counter at Dahls Grocery when the kids were little. She went on to work as the office manager at the Therapy Center, then retired from GAB Robins as an insurance adjuster after 17 years.

When her girls were young, she enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader, and a youth girls softball coach. She loved attending recitals, musical and dance performances of her kids and grandchildren.

She later enjoyed organizing her UHS Class of 62 reunions, cruise nights with her blue Ford Pick-up and fishing in Minnesota. She would sometimes take trips to a casino and loved getting together with friends. Sandi was a very avid Denver Bronco and Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Sandi was very passionate about everything she loved. Sandi will be missed very much for her kind spirit, her laugh & her love for her family and friends. She held everyone she loved, deeply in her heart.

Sandi is survived by her husband of 54 years Mike, daughters Jamey Porter, Jodey Bretthauer (Doug) and 7 grandchildren, Emma, Lily, Cassidy, Addy, Ben, Casey and Nicolaas. Her sister Joan (Max) Westby and nephews Kenny and Terry (Tracey) Westby.

Due to Covid-19 concerns no services are being held at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Interment of the cremains will be at the McDivitt Grove Cemetery in the spring of 2021.
