Verl Sims

Verl N. Sims, 93, passed away November 21,2020. He was born July 22, 1927 to Charles and Cora (Martin) Sims and resided in Des Moines for most of his life. He graduated from Pillsbury Military Academy in Minnesota.

Verl was a Des Moines firefighter for 45 years before retiring in 1992. He also owned Sims TV Repair for many years. He served in the Korean War in the Army as a firefighter in Orleans, France from 1953 to 1955.

Verl’s interests included golf, horseshoes, singing in the church choir, cribbage and other card games and trips to the West coast. He was a member of Valley United Methodist Church since 1975.

After retirement, he enjoyed monthly breakfasts with other retired firefighters and daily coffee with the HyVee Coffee Club at Jordan Creek.

Verl is survived by his Wife, Andra; Daughter, Sharon (Lyndell) Wolff; Step-children, Cindy (John) Hanson, Brad (Lisa) Crossett, Janice (Joel) Stolfus, Sheryl (Charlie Pearson) Ragland , Sandy (Dave) Wingert, Diane (Dennis) O’Brien and Scott (Libby) Geistkemper; over 21 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, son, Steven Craig and wives, Ida and Carolyn.

Private graveside services will take place Friday, December 4, 2020 at Iowa Veterans Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
