Service Details

Carol Ann (Petty) State, 80, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa entered into Eternity at her home on November 17, 2020.

Carol Ann was born to M. Richard Petty and Wilma Irene (Pickell) Petty on Christmas Day, 1939. She grew up with her six sisters – “The Petty Girls” - and her younger brother on the East Side of Des Moines. On April 29, 1960 Carol was united in marriage with Jerry Glenn State, also of East Des Moines. Carol and Jerry moved to Pleasant Hill in 1964 where they raised their family and lived out their lives.

Carol Ann enjoyed traveling and camping with her husband. They saw a large part of the United States and spent many vacations fishing on a lake in Ontario. When at home, Carol loved to garden and had two “green thumbs” as proven by her fabulous yard full of flowers and many hundreds of jars of canned tomatoes, pears, and green beans. She enjoyed crocheting, collecting unique items and was an avid fan of QVC. Carol Ann loved spending time with her family. She was a breast cancer survivor.

Carol Ann is survived by her daughter Laura (Jeff) Spoelstra of San Jose, California; her son Jerry (Veronica) State, Jr. of Alton, Texas; her grandchildren Racheal (Zachary) Gibbons, Sandra State, Jessica (Jeremy) McCullough, Jerry State, Natalie Spoelstra, and Peter Spoelstra; her great-grandchildren Maddox and Amelia Gibbons; and her siblings Diana Waters, Linda (Frank) Corwin, Amy (Wayne) Westendorf, and Richard (Deb) Petty; and many, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by Jerry Sr, her husband of 40 years; her granddaughter Pamela Spoelstra; her daughter-in-law Christine State; her parents; and her sisters Mary Lou Lane, Patricia Watson, and Judy Shannon.

There will be a Graveside Service at 11:00 a.m. Monday December 7, 2020 at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. All are welcome. Due to the pandemic a memorial service for extended family and friends will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
