Marquetta “Marty” Jo Joelson, age 83, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2020 at Eldora Specialty Care in Eldora, Iowa.

Marty was born June 14, 1936 in Des Moines, Iowa to John and Mabel (Bowie) Collins. She graduated from Des Moines Tech High School in 1954. She earned her LPN degree from DMACC in 1972. She was united in marriage to Ronald Alva Joelson on April 11, 1957 at Marquisville United Methodist Church in Des Moines. Marty retired from Des Moines Veterans Hospital in 1996, where she made many lifelong friends. She then worked at Bidwell Riverside and ran the kitchen for ten years. She enjoyed volunteering at the Polk County Senior Center for many years.

Marty was an enthusiastic card player. She enjoyed baking cookies, and dressing her grandchildren in her t-shirts for slumber parties. Some of her favorite memories were made traveling to Dubuque in the fall and taking her grandchildren to the Omaha Zoo. She was a member of North Des Moines Senior Center and a long-time member of Simpson United Methodist Church and Staves Memorial UMC.

She is survived by her children, Kari (Frank) Ginther, Iner (Terri) Joelson, Ronald E. (Lisa) Joelson, Charles (Marjorie) Joelson, and DeLoris Gray; grandchildren, Daniel (Lisa), Bryan, Casey, Lizzie, Ronald Kyle, Morgan, Kyr Todd, Allison, Amanda, Ashley, Ashley, Zariah, and Zohntay; twelve great-grandchildren; siblings, Patricia Collins, Forrest (Patti) Collins, and Dale (Cindy) Collins; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Marty was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Joelson; parents, John and Mabel Collins; granddaughter, Erin Ginther; and son-in-law, Todd Gray.

Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 21, 2020 at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 E Madison Avenue, Des Moines. Lunch will follow the service. Services will conclude with burial of the urn at Laurel Hill Cemetery.
