Martin Daniel Feeney
January 03, 2020
Martin Daniel Feeney, 71, beloved husband, father and professor, died January 3, 2020. His family will celebrate his life on Saturday, January 11, 2020, with a visitation from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, and the memorial service later that day at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 10395 University Ave., in Clive.
Marty was born on March 10, 1948 to Pearl (LaFontaine) and Robert E. Feeney in Boston, MA. He graduated from Boston College High School and received his bachelor’s degree in communication and theatre studies from Boston College. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served in the submarine service on The George C. Marshall Polaris Missile Sub during the Vietnam War.
Marty returned to school and earned his Master’s and PhD in communication and media studies from Bowling Green State University in Ohio with his ambitious dissertation on the art of rhetorical criticism in film, rock music, and the novel.
Over the course of his decades-long teaching career at Monmouth College (Monmouth, IL), Central College (Pella, IA), and Simpson College (Indianola, IA), Marty gave thousands of students the joys of lively classroom discussions, Letterman-style top-10 lists, and his famous mason jars filled with Hershey bars to reward great work.
He filled his life outside of work with many other passions. Marty was a lifelong athlete and runner; he won 104 medals at the Iowa Senior Olympics and was a gold medalist in the 2009 Governor’s Cup race in Des Moines, IA. He directed over 20 plays and as a young student, he won the New England Drama Association’s "Best Play" award for his co-authored play titled "18th Noel."
Marty above all was a devoted husband and father adored by his family. This brilliant, dedicated, caring and compassionate man will be greatly missed by his wife of 35 years, Susan Eggert; children, Rob (Caitlin) Feeney and Caroline (Tim Crawford) Feeney; his sister, Pearlan (Otto Grater) Feeney-Grater; grandson, Nolan Charles Feeney; his nieces and nephew; and his students. Marty was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be directed to the Speech and Debate Program at Simpson College, 701 North C. Street, Indianola, IA 50125. Condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Dear Susan and family, When I read the news today in the Monmouth College Alumni magazine about Marty's passing, I was deeply saddened and shocked. Marty was a very important colleague to me at Monmouth College. He helped me during my first years of teaching. His influence to his former colleagues and students will continue. Marty really loved you, Susan, and your family. My hope is that the words of your friends will be of comfort for you during this time.

Dear Susan,
I was deeply saddened today to learn in the Monmouth College Alumni magazine that Marty passed away. Marty was a fantastic professor and a great friend! I took one of his classes the first trimester that he taught at Monmouth. His classes were wonderful in terms of content, creativity, and fun! His enthusiasm was contagious. In addition to many classes with Marty, he also coached me on the speech team and college newspaper. I always looked forward to visiting with your family in Pella over the years. I am so thankful that Marty was my professor and my friend. He broadened my horizons. This is a tragic loss. Marty was much loved and will be dearly missed by many people. May God bless and comfort you, Rob, and Caroline.

All my best to Susan and family. My heart hurts with you. Thoroughly enjoyed working with Marty at Central College. His office was in the Theater Building. On occasion I would be scheduled to teach a class in that building. Magic would happen when Marty would walk by, hear our discussion or my lecture, walk in the room and join us without skipping a beat. The back-and-forth with students and/or me was a blast.

I am so sorry for your loss.
My son Jason absolutely loved Professor Feeney and would tell me stories about his class (x-files)
I very much appreciated his kind words on my sons passing.
Now they can share stories together.
He will be missed ??

I'm saddened to hear about your family's great loss. Marty was the best of the best. He was by far my most memorable professor at Central, and continued to be a great friend from afar. He even snail-mailed me some (long lost to me) articles a few years back from Leo Buscaglia, that he'd given our class to read Freshman year (1999), after I reached out inquiring on such for a coworker. Feeney is truly missed, but he will never be forgotten.

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Professor Feeney. He was definitely one of a kind. His class was the first one my husband and I took together at Simpson and we both loved him and laughed everyday at his antics and wild personality. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences to the family.

I am so deeply saddened by the unexpected news of Marty's passing. It had been many years since I had seen Marty but we had been in touch since 2014 on FB. One of my favorite professors at Central. Took mass media from him. I still tell people to this day, there's reality, then there's mediated reality. God bless Marty and the family.

So sorry to hear of Professor Feeney's passing. 25 years later, I STILL remember how to spell "receive" with his voice in my head ("RECE RECE RECEIVE!) and in my writing I remember how important it is to grab readers with a good strong lead. You will be in my thoughts during this difficult time.

From Upward Bound through all 4 years at Central- Marty Feeney brought laughter and delight into my education. I always looked forward to his classes and delighted when a catchy title or a quotable line from a paper I turned in won a famous mason jar. It may has well have been a Pulitzer- it felt amazing to know that a few of your words could catch the attention of someone who seemed larger than life. Thank you Marty Feeney for sharing your enthusiasm and encouragement with so many. Thank you to his family for sharing him with all of us.

So completely heartbroken to hear about Martys passing. He was a wonderful professor, friend, and a big influence on my life as a college student. I worked with Marty on the Speech team, driving a van all the way out to Atlantic City. We worked together on the Central College Ray, rolling copy through the wax machine and pasting it over the light board. I took several of his classes writing papers hoping to win a mug, thinking I wonder if Marty will like this?.
He was such a firecracker. So energetic. Funny. He was the kind of professor who made you believe anything was possible. Write that story. Give that speech. Get that interview!
I will watch Citizen Kane and think of the top 10 things we will all miss about Marty Feeney. He was truly one of the best. My sincerest condolences to his family.

I knew Marty since he was a teenager and watched him perform in the many benefit shows we did with our traveling group. Had a great visit with him a few years ago and he managed to keep in touch ever since. A great guy. Can't believe he is gone and will miss him very much.

Marty was one of the best teachers I had during my time at Monmouth - he didn't let me coast but pushed me to be the best I could be. Then, many years later, I had the great fortune of joining him as a coach on the Simpson Speech and Debate team. Once again I was incredibly impressed with Marty's passion and insight. He leaves quite a legacy at THREE schools, in addition to his wife and family.
