LaVonne “Tiny” McCabe, age 82, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, November 17, 2019. She was born to the late Dolliver and Roselind (Cummins) Zinke on April 20, 1937 in Audubon, IA.

LaVonne attended school in Audubon, IA before moving to Des Moines, IA where she met her future husband Charles Patrick McCabe Jr. As the story goes, Charles and LaVonne met when LaVonne and some of her friends came upon two boys hitchhiking. The hitchhikers turned out to be Charles McCabe Jr. and his cousin Chuck Ryan. Lavonne and her friends offered the boys a ride and it was love at first site for LaVonne and Charles, who tied the knot in 1957. Once married, Charles and LaVonne left the Des Moines area for Maryland while Charles served in the Army before eventually relocating to Algona, IA, where they lived for more than 50 years.

LaVonne was active in the community as a 4-H Leader and loved to deliver meals to homebound patients through the hospitals “Meals on Wheels” program. LaVonne also loved volunteering at the Catholic Fair stand during the county fair, and loved to work in the concession stands at Bishop Garrigan High School.

LaVonne loved knitting and loved making arts and crafts. She always took the time to handcraft gifts, cards or blankets for those she loved. This love of arts and crafts led her to in to business as a partner in the store “Originals From the Heart” in Algona. She was a partner in the store from 1985-2018. She was also employed by Equifax, Sernets, and Millers Country Peddler.

LaVonne was preceded in death by her parents, Dolliver and Roselind Zinke, her sister Pat Peterson (Robert “Buzz” Peterson), and her husband of more than 50 years, Charles McCabe Jr.

She is survived by her daughter Lori Roskam (Roger), son Pat McCabe (Nichole) , son Jon McCabe, and 5 grandchildren (Breanna McCabe, Carson McCabe, Jacob Roskam, Hunter McCabe and Devon Roskam and one great-grandson Balyn Hein. She is also survived by her brothers Don Zinke (Ada), Michael Zinke (Kathy) and Gary Zinke
