March 18, 2019

Service Details

Fay O. Jolly, Jr. ascended to heaven on March 18, 2019, to be reunited with his wife, Ruth, and daughter, Melody, who had reached our Lord’s loving arms before him.

Visitation will be Monday, March 25, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. A Service of Remembrance honoring Fay will be held on Tuesday, March 26, at 10:30 a.m., at The Well, 2625 Hubbell Ave., Des Moines. A light lunch will follow the service, with interment following at Highland Memory Gardens.

Fay was born December 24, 1922, the third child of Luella and Fay O. Jolly, Sr. He lived most of his life in Des Moines, Iowa. Fay was a graduate of East High School and attended many of the school-wide reunions. He enjoyed playing the saxophone and had the gift of “playing by ear.” He also loved listening to Big Band Music. Fay was an avid gardener, and it was said that “every blade of grass stood at attention” in his yard.

Fay served his country in World War II, receiving a Bronze Star medal, for crossing a minefield to help rescue the pilot of a downed plane. He served in five European battle campaigns and received a diploma in thanks from France for helping to liberate their country.

Fay’s 1968 Buick Riviera was his pride and joy. He enjoyed showing it at car shows and was a member of the Antiques Automobile Club of America and the Riviera Owners Association.

Fay accepted the Lord as his personal Savior while watching a Billy Graham crusade on television. This changed his life completely, wiping away angst and bitterness that he had held for many years.

He was a member of Evangelical Covenant Church (now The Well). So enjoying the out-of-doors, Fay mowed and was responsible for the church’s lawn for several decades. He was also head usher at the church for many years.

Fay is survived by his daughter, Crystal; son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Carl and Susan Heuss; five grandchildren: Renee (Chad) Voss, Anton (Leah) Heuss, Hope (Terry) Stevenson, Alissa (Michael) Fletcher, and Justin (Alli) Heuss; and 12 great-grandchildren.
