Service Details

Thomas Lyle McVey, 72, passed away Friday, February 8, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Tom was born October 31, 1946 to Howard and Helen McVey of Des Moines, the older of two sons. He graduated from Des Moines Tech High School in 1964 and majored in auto body. He spent his entire life working as a painter for Frank Opdyke, Dewey Ford, R. Jones, and Owen Crist Auto Body, where he spent the last 33 years before his retirement in 2007. Tom was married to his first love, Marjorie in 1966 and loved to argue! Tom’s mom said one time he never went anywhere that he didn’t know someone and when he left he had another friend. Tom was true to his friends. He once made a pact with an old friend – If one passes before the other, the remaining one would help the family as much as possible. Tom lived up to his end of the pact when his friend Jerry passed first. Tom was a true life member of the NRA and the Iowa Sportsman’s Federation, and a darn good shot with a pistol. He belonged to the Colfax Gun Club and he prized his best friend K-D, his dog.

Tom was preceded in death by his father Howard and his brother Mike, friends Jim Wiley, Jerry Scott, Chuck Sickels and Steve Long, and many others.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Marjorie McVey; mother, Helen McVey; sister-in-law, Peggy McVey; nephews, Michael and Edward; and numerous cousins.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, followed by cremation.
