Gerald F. Kissinger

Gerald “Jerry” Kissinger, 91, passed away October 15, 2018, at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. He was born September 8, 1927, in Melcher, Iowa, to Foster and Vera Kissinger.

Jerry was united in marriage to Gerda Larsen in 1948 and to this union three daughters were born. He was later married to Joyce Long in 1969 and they shared 43 years together until her passing in 2013.

Jerry served in the United States Coast Guard and was stationed in Hawaii. He worked as a Pressman at Meredith Publishing for 44 years. In his younger years, he enjoyed dancing at Val-Air Ballroom and Riverview. Jerry also enjoyed fishing, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, and attending his grandchildren’s numerous activities.

Jerry is survived by his daughters, Karen Kissinger, Dianne Kissinger-Johnson, and Sandy (Barry) Pottinger; step-daughter, Patti Allen; grandchildren, Alayna Kissinger, Joel (Jordan) Decker, Justin Decker, Missey Michel, and Mindy Seeman; his great-grandchildren, Kensi, Addi, Lucas, Layla, Landon, Lydia, Kaden, and Brady; half-sisters, Nancy Hall and Susan Churchill; step-sister, Linda Gotta; as well as other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce Kissinger; sister, Glendora Woods; step-mother, Florence Kissinger; half-sister, Sally Caulkins; and grandsons-in-law, Dennis Michel and Jacob Seeman.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 19, 2018, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home one hour prior to service time. Private family inurnment will be held at Pine Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League in loving memory of Jerry.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Sunny View Care Center and Hospice of the Midwest for the love and compassionate care Jerry received.
