Roy Laverne Downing was born July 17, 1924, in Bloomfield, Iowa to Bert and Bessie (Smith) Downing. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, serving as an Army Medic and Sergeant in England, France, and Germany.

He worked for the Department of Natural Resources for 41 years, first as a Conservation Officer in Appanoose and Monroe counties, then as Superintendent of Waters. After retirement, he formed and served as president of Lakeside Corporation.

Roy enjoyed working on the family farm, snowmobiling, boating, hunting, fishing with family and friends.

Roy passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 14, 2018 with family by his side at the Monroe Care Center in Albia, Iowa at the age of 94.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 18, 2018 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Friday, October 19, also at the funeral home. Roy will be laid to rest at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

He is survived by his son David Downing, grandson David Roy Downing, and brother Lloyd Downing.

Roy was preceded in death by his first wife Viola Downing and his second wife Nancy Downing.
