William J. Evans

William “Bill” Evans, 93, of West Des Moines passed away on July 12, 2018.

Bill was born February 21, 1925 in Ellis, NE to Frances and Della (Larkin) Evans. He was a brother to “O.D.” (Jayne) and Frances (Norris) Olney. Bill graduated from WDM Valley High in 1942. After high school Bill enlisted in the Navy. He served as a corpsman aboard the USS Albemarle and later at Bethesda Naval Hospital where he met his beloved wife. Bill and Betty married on July 5, 1947. They spent the next 69 years together until Betty’s passing in 2016.

In 1954 they moved back to West Des Moines from DC. Bill then attended Drake University Pharmacy School. He spent most of his career in pharmaceutical sales.
In 1985, at the age of 60, Bill retired from Sandoz Pharmaceutical. He and Betty traveled the country in their motorhome looking for somewhere warm to spend the winters. They spent the next 20 plus years in Sun City, Arizona, as snowbirds, where they were joined by many of their West Des Moines friends.

Bill pursued many hobbies. In his later years he enjoyed woodworking and making things for his children and grandchildren.

Bill will alway be remembered for his kindness to others, great sense of humor, love for the Iowa Hawkeyes, and his never-ending love and devotion to his family.

Bill is survived by his children, Dee Campbell, Joe (Kim J.) Evans, Bob (Kim S.) Evans; grandchildren, Dan (Diane) Campbell, Rob (Ami) Campbell, Drew (Yelena) Evans, Jeff (Abby) Evans, Heather (Matt) Therkelsen; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 1:30 pm, Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm. Following the service, Bill will be laid to rest with military honors next to the love of his life, Betty, at Resthaven Cemetery.
