James Rankin, 76, passed away June 15, 2018, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa surrounded by his family. Jim was born on August 31, 1941, to Clifton and Lucile (Nelson) Rankin in Estherville, Iowa where he was the youngest of six children.

Jim went to Des Moines Technical High School, and then went out into the work force. He worked in production and management at Firestone Tire and Rubber for 28 years. During these years, he was also a volunteer firefighter and E.M.T. for the city of Windsor Heights. After retiring from Firestone, he started his own business, Jim Rankin Remodeling and Repairs. When he wasn’t working, Jim spent most of his time at Lake Ponderosa where he enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with his family. He was an avid fan at all of his grandchildren’s many sporting events. Jim was a talented wood worker and made many wood carvings as a hobby. In recent years, Jim and his wife wintered in Arizona where they enjoyed dancing, taking day excursions and playing cards with friends.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed immediately by a memorial service at 12:00 p.m., Monday, June 25, 2018, at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Pkwy, West Des Moines. Private family burial will take place at Avon Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Linda; daughters, Robin Higgins and Jennifer (David) King; grandchildren, Dustin (Jessica) Rankin, Amber Higgins, Sam and Charlie King; five great- grandchildren; sisters, Eleanor “Honey” Lau, Patricia Lunn, and Anita “Tiny” Pack. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth “Bud” Rankin; and sister, Helen Letze.
