Richard Forrest O'Brien

Richard Forrest O’Brien, 81, passed away June 8, 2018. Services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. in Des Moines with visitation on Tuesday, June 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. and the funeral service on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Richard was born December 2, 1936 in Des Moines to Margaret (Grandstaff) and Danny O’Brien. After high school graduation in 1955, Richard joined the US Air Force and served for six years. He then worked for Goodyear for 26 years, drove a truck, and later worked as a janitor at East High School. Richard loved the outdoors and the family spent most weekends camping. The rule was to be ready when Dad got home from work so the family could hit the road in the camper. Richard enjoyed a variety of hobbies over the years, fishing, and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Sharon; children, Sherry (Steve) Bash, Norien Lyons, and Todd (Karla) O’Brien; his step-children, Tina, Kelley, Russell and John; numerous grand and great-grandchildren; his siblings, William (Mary), and Sharon Brooks; his aunt, Alice Marnin; and a host of relatives and friends. Richard was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary; his parents, Danny and Margaret; grandchildren, Melody and Tony; brother, Michael; and sister, Connie Weiser.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
