Violet Mae Sterrett, 87, died peacefully at Regency Care Center in Norwalk, IA on Tuesday, March 13, surrounded by her family. She was a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, an aunt, a friend, and a neighbor. She was born on March 8, 1931 to Vernie & Ruth (Sparks) Struth. Violet was a South Side native and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1949. On September 19, 1959, Violet married William (Bill) Sterrett and together they had five children. Violet was heavily involved with VFW Post #738 & the Military Order of the Cootie, where she held many different positions, and always had the papers scattered on her kitchen table to prove it! Violet enjoyed spending time with her family, keeping her grandkids satisfied with the best mac-and-cheese on this side of the Mississippi, baking and decorating cakes, and volunteering in the community with veterans at the VA Hospital in Des Moines, IA. She was always there to offer her guidance and support for anyone that needed it. Violet was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and siblings; James, Jessie, Estella, Mary, and Helen.

She is survived by her children, Vicki Carney, Julie (Tom) McDonald, William Sterrett, Margaret VanSickle, and Betty (Dan) Morrow; 10 grandchildren, Tracey (Justin) Sheridan, Stacey (Jason) Blakeslee, Jim (Cody) McDonald, Dan Sterrett, Dana (Tim) Norman, Sarah VanSickle, Kali (Gary) Bernardino, Tyler Morrow, Megan (Travis) Foy, and Dominique Sterrett; 13 great-grandchildren, Abagail Sheridan, Alivia Sheridan, Gage Blakeslee, Chase Blakeslee, Troy Blakeslee, Sophie Blakeslee, Savanna VanSickle, Sabrey VanSickle, Sevan McDowell, Jordyn Norman, Josie Norman, Landon Bernardino, Jaxson McDonald, and many other extended family members and friends.

Family, friends, and others whose lives Violet touched are invited to Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St, Des Moines, Iowa 50309 on Monday, March 19th from 5pm-7pm to reminisce, support each other, and of course, chat; because that’s what Violet liked to do. You’re also welcome to join family and friends on Tuesday, March 20th at Noon for a funeral service at Hamilton’s Southtown, 5400 SW 9th St, Des Moines, IA 50315, followed by a burial service at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 7601 Fleur Dr, Des Moines, IA 50321.

If you would like to make a memorial contribution in Violet’s honor, we request that you do so to the Regency Care Center in Norwalk, IA for activities for the residents where Violet enjoyed playing BINGO or to St. Croix Hospice.
