Service Details

Chris Widmer, age 74, walked into heaven on January 11, 2018, at home surrounded by his loving family. He fought a hard battle with colon cancer.

Chris was born to Lloyd Arthur Widmer and Clara Vina Apple on January 26, 1943, in Burlington, Iowa. He joined his three older siblings, Glenna Ruth, Maynard Arthur and Marilyn Dixie, and later welcomed his younger brother Wade Claire into the family. He grew up farming in Henry County, Iowa, near Morning Sun. Chris proudly served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Mattaponi AO-41 in the Pacific 1962-1964.

He married Diana Janeen Wymer July 30, 1965, at Sunshine Open Bible Church in Des Moines, Iowa. He gave his life to Christ as a young child and continued to grow closer to God throughout his life. Chris had a big, big heart and was ever faithful. He touched many lives by finding ways to bless those he knew and even those he didn’t. He wanted nothing more than for his family and friends to love Jesus as much as he did and all be together in heaven someday. He loved attending New Hope Assembly of God in Urbandale.

His family brought more joy into his life than anything else. He loved his children and cherished his grandchildren. He treasured every moment spent with them.

He retired from ADM after 25 years. He then worked for both the Johnston and Bondurant school districts driving a school bus.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wade and Maynard; and sister, Glenna Colyn.

He is survived by his wife, Diana and children, Heidi (Bob) Lawson, Janilla (Bud) Booth, Justin (Megan) and Aaron (Beth) Widmer, as well as grandchildren: Maia and Kaili Lawson, Anthony Peavy, Lydia and Adalyn Widmer, Gwenyth and Lillian Widmer. Their foster son Thoi Nguyen and his family also survive him.

A private graveside service will be held with military honors.

Memorial contributions in honor of Chris can be directed to the family.
