Martha N. Hyland

Martha N. Hyland, 93, passed away January 9, 2018 at Fleur Heights Care Center.

Martha was born April 28, 1924 in Marseille, France to Vincenzo and Marie Della Rocca. She met an American soldier, Robert Hyland and moved to the United States in 1947.

Martha had a passion for sewing and designing custom clothing. She loved children, gardening, and enjoyed buying and selling antiques.

In later years she provided concessions for the Pirtle Auction Service and was well known for her “Martha’s Special” and chocolate cake. Never wanting to miss a day of the Iowa State Fair, she worked in the General Store until she was 88. Her special area was known as Martha’s Doll House.

She is survived by her daughters, Regina Pirtle and Jeanine (John) Crise; grandchildren, Will (Molly) Pirtle, Jason (Marra) Pirtle, Nicole (Ben) Bagley and Michelle (Nicole) Crise; and her great-grandchildren, Hunter, Reese, Gianna, Lucca, Nora, Justin and Alissa.

Martha was preceded in death by her siblings, Rose, Roger and Blaise Della Rocca and her son-in-law, Bill Pirtle.

The family will greet friends Monday, January 15, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. with the funeral service following at 12 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Martha will be laid to rest at Scotch Ridge Cemetery in Carlisle, Iowa.
