The world suffered a great loss on January 4, 2018 when David left this life. David Lee Kronick was born March 31st, 1938 to Harry and Doris Kronick in South Bend, Indiana. David graduated high school from Mishawaka High (Go Caveman!). David attended Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Illinois, Northwestern Illinois and Western Illinois earning a bachelor degree in science. While his high school counselor talked him out of being an architect, he always had an interest in architecture and was a great admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright. David worked for the Bell system in Chicago and Quest in Des Moines as an engineer until retirement in 1992. David had a wicked and dry sense of humor. Family and friend get-togethers were filled with laughter when he was in attendance. David was a very intelligent man especially in the math and sciences. He subscribed to many science magazines and was always intrigued with the latest science developments and technology. He loved anything to do with space and one of his favorite memories was when he visited Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral to see one of the space shuttles launched into space. Due to his interest in computers and technology, he purchased a home computer (which filled up a corner of the room due to its size) when they first were made available for home use. In addition to loving science, math, and technology, he was also very artistic. He loved drawing, painting and crafts. He loved listening to opera, watching musicals, and sang with a beautiful tenor voice, idolizing Luciano Pavarotti. In his retirement years, he developed an interest, with his wife, in quilting and embroidery. He created and digitized quilting and embroidery designs that could be used on embroidery machines. He was an avid science fiction reader and Star Trek fan. He was a curious man and thrived on learning new things. David loved football, always cheering on Iowa State Cyclones, Notre Dame and the Chicago Bears. He was very much a family man and family was the most important thing to him. He is survived by his three devoted daughters, Karen (Neil) vanOostenrijk, Linda Mercer and Rebecca (Michael) Kronick; his grandchildren, in which he was very proud of, Ryan (Janelle) Kronick, Austin Kronick, Esther (Landon) Baumhover, Melanie (Nick) Kronick, Douglas vanOostenrijk, Benjamin Mercer, Isaac Mercer, and his 1st great-grandchild-to-be, Maximus, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Doris Kronick, his brother, Hyman Kronick, and his sister, Ava Kronick Horvath. He lost two beautiful and loving wives, Esther Jo “Joey” Taylor Kronick (1978) and Linda England Kronick (2012). He was also preceded in death by his son, David Adlai (Kim) Kronick (2006). In lieu of flowers, monetary donations can be made to your local Animal Rescue League or Wounded Warrior Project in David’s name.
