Service Details

Vivian Ladwig, 89, passed away December 15, 2017, at Valley View Village. She was born in Fergus Falls, MN on March 1, 1928, the daughter of George and Eva Smith.

After high school graduation, Vivian received her 2-year teaching degree from St. Cloud State College in 1948 and her 4-year teaching degree from Drake University in 1969. Her first teaching job was in a one room school house in Minnesota where the students were children of iron miners from Eastern Europe. She taught in various places for many years, including 20 years in Des Moines at Four Mile Elementary School.

Vivian retired at the age of 62 when she suddenly became blind from macular degeneration. However, that didn’t stop her love of reading as The Commission for the Blind supplied her with hundreds of books on tape.

Vivian leaves a legacy of love and is survived by her children, Cheryl Day, Jill Brown, and Mark Nordin; three step-children, Phyllis Freeman, Patricia Sandstrom, and Allan Ladwig; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Highland Memory Gardens, 1 NE 60th Avenue in Des Moines.
