Stanley Van Veen, age 76, passed away August 11, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

He was born October 7, 1940 in Pella Iowa. He lived with his grandmother on a farm near Monroe Iowa until he was school age. He moved to Des Moines to live with his mother Wilma Edenburn and attended public school at Tech High School. He left school in 12th grade to take a job at the John Deere plant in Ankeny. He worked there 30 years until he retired in 1989.

He married his high school sweetheart Leona Palmer on December 3rd, 1960. There were four children born from this union; John, Stan, Jr., Liza and Nick. After he retired from John Deere, the family moved from Carlisle to a farm near New Virginia. Stan loved the farm and raised his children to join 4-H and raise and show P.O.A. Ponies. Stan was a founding member of the Iowa P.O.A. Club. He loved the Iowa State Fair and the Warren County Fair. He served as the 4-H horse advisor for many years and the Superintendent at the Warren County Fair, he also served as the Vice President of the Iowa P.O.A. Club.

He is preceded in death by his mother and son, Nick.

Stanley is survived by his wife of 56 years, Leona; sons, John (Sandy) and Stanley, Jr.; daughter, Liza (Kevin) Hassevoort; grandchildren, Andrea (Joey) Kanoy, Samantha (John) Hutton, Stephanie (Tom) Eckland, Mark Van Veen and Sam Phillips; five great-granddaughters and a great-grandson due in December; brothers, James (Vickie), Paul (Peggy) and Warren (Janie) Edenburn; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Stan knew that the things we leave behind are never as important as the people. A celebration of his life will be held at his farm home in New Virginia on August 19, 2017 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm.

Memorials will be used for remembrance bricks at the Iowa State Fairgrounds and the Warren County Fairgrounds.
