Dorothy R. Knight

Dorothy R. Knight, age 85, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at her home in Des Moines.

Dorothy was born July 14, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, to George and Alberta Mitchell. She graduated from East High School in 1950. She retired from Allied Insurance after 19 years as the Mail Room Supervisor.

Dorothy was a member of Boline Manfredi VFW Post 9662 Auxiliary where she enjoyed serving meals and selling remembrance poppies for fund raising. She liked reading, watching the Hallmark channel, and was an avid Cardinals fan. Dorothy was independent and a realist. She lived a practical, regimented life and instilled in her family the merit of a strong work ethic and the valuable skills of cooking, sewing, and doing yard work well. She was honest about how she felt, and if she showed you a smile, you were certain it was genuine. She was proud of her children and grandchildren, and expressed herself through deeds rather than words.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Harold “Pete” (Connie) Knight; daughter, Janet (Ken) Griggs; grandchildren, Greg (Stacey) Griggs, Tim (Jessie) Griggs and Cory Knight; great-granddaughters, Kassie, Alex, Jordan, Sidney and Sierra; great-grandson, Lucas; great-great-granddaughter, Lydia; her sister and best friend, Barbara Vertz; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold.

There will be a visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2017, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Cremation will follow. Inurnment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 22, 2017.
