Mary Ellen (MacKinnon) Courtney was born June 4, 1953, in Colorado, to John and Eugenia (Paige) MacKinnon. She passed away Monday, June 26, 2017 at the age of 64.

Mary trained as a visual artist during her youth in Colorado and moved to Iowa in the 1970s, where she married and had several children. She continued to work in pen and ink and watercolor throughout her life, and often gifted hand-painted cards to friends and family in addition to commercial work, including owning her own gallery in Winterset, Iowa.

When her children were older, she worked in various downtown Des Moines restaurants as a bartender and server and developed a number of long-time regulars and friends she enjoyed talking with about current events.

She loved animals, especially her dogs, including an Alaskan Malamute mix and a series of Border Collies over the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her children, Sean Courtney, Meghan Courtney and Kelly Courtney, siblings, Bruce (Roxanne) MacKinnon and Ann (Ron) Forsberg, longtime companion, Ken Plagge, nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many friends.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed immediately by funeral services at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines.
