Service Details

Arthur Junior King went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 25th, 2017. A celebration of life will be held at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 E. Madison Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday, June 30th, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one and one-half hours before the service. Inurnment will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery at a later date.

Art was born in Des Moines on February 8th, 1927, to Commodore Arthur and Grace (Epps) King. He proudly served in the U. S. Navy during W. W. II (1944-1946) as a gunnery instructor in the South Pacific (the Island of Saipan). Following his honorable discharge, he graduated from West High School in 1948 and married Bonnie June Bean on January 16, 1949. They attended York College, in York, Nebraska, together. They were eventually blessed with two daughters, Sharon and Karon, two grandsons, Matthew and Artie, and a great grandson, William.

Art worked for Arthur H. Neumann Construction Co. for over 30 years, as well as The Baker Group for 8 years. He was a longtime member of Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities, including helping with the building of the church from 1957 to 1959. He built their home with the help of family and friends as well as building a lakeside home in Minnesota, and loved spending time at the lake.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign War. The Iowa Blood Bank appreciated his willingness to donate a total of 21 gallons of blood in his lifetime.

Art is survived by his wife, Bonnie, of 68 years, their two daughters, Sharon (Paul) Ubben of Jewell, Iowa, and Karon (LaVern) Velau of Klemme, Iowa; two grandsons, Dr. Matthew (Candace) Ubben of Washington, D.C., and Artie Moll of Des Moines, a great grandson, William Ubben, a sister, Betty Lawler of Des Moines, a sister in law, Donna Bean of Minnesota, and multiple cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Lorraine Hutton Sandquist, and two brothers, Earl Hutton, and Joseph King.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, in loving memory of Art.
