Rose Carter


Rose Jane Amiss Carter, age 95, passed away, after a lengthy battle with cancer, on the morning of April 12, 2017, in the Altoona Nursing and Rehab Center, Altoona, Iowa.

Rose, the youngest of four children, was born to Thomas Henry and Minerva Jane Amiss on July 18, 1921, in St. George, Kansas. She married Kenneth Albert Carter on December 25, 1940. The couple moved to Altoona, Iowa in 1950 and, with the exception of tours of duty in Germany and Japan, spent their remaining years raising seven children in Altoona.

Rose is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; sons, Darol and Keith Carter; daughters-in-law, Susan and Kathy Carter; and grandson, Dax Bell.

Surviving family include a sister, Violet Amiss Mertz (Kansas); children, Larry Carter (Iowa), Kathryn and Richard Berry (Missouri), Ronald and Janet Carter (Missouri), Ethel Lee Carter and Tom Smith (Minnesota), and Vaughn and Carolyn Bell (Iowa); 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the Des Moines Hospice staff that provided exceptional care to our mother during her lengthy illness.

Interment: 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, Altoona Memorial Cemetery, between NE 5490th East and NE 80th St. in Altoona. ORDM Ruby Eason, officiating.
