Lillian K. Newman

Lillian K. Newman passed away April 11, 2017, at the Monroe Care Center in Albia, Iowa. She was born June 17, 1922, to Jesse Franklin Broyles and Lucy Stone Broyles in Cottonwood, South Dakota.

Lillian was raised in Custer, SD. She graduated from Custer High School and Strayer College in Washington D.C. After graduating Lillian went to work as a secretary in Salt Lake City, Utah and then to San Francisco to work for United Airlines- Pacific Operations, where she met and married David Clayton Newman on July 1, 1945. Lillian and David were married for 69 years. They were transferred to Des Moines after the war where they lived for the rest of their married life.

Lillian was an active member of Park Avenue Presbyterian Church for 60 years. She held several positions, working with the women to provide countless dinners and luncheons and was a circle member. Lillian was also a member of Tri T, Kappa Kappa IOTA, and was a Campfire and Boy Scout leader.

Lillian enjoyed ceramics, receiving several blue ribbons at the Iowa State Fair. She also enjoyed reading, Genealogy, quilting, gardening, traveling and spending time with her family.

Lillian worked for the Des Moines Public Schools as a secretary at Horace Mann Elementary where she helped 2 generations in the office, and ended her career at Studebaker Elementary.

Lillian is survived by her children, Brian David Newman (Mary Catherine [Cathy] Warble) Puffenbarger of Mauertown, VA, Karen Kay Newman Brown (Dennis Craig Brown) Ottumwa, IA, and Raymond Clayton Newman of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren, James Tyree Puffenbarger III of Winchester, ID, Aaron Jay Puffenbarger (Melissa Ruth Atkins) of Bridgewater, VA, Jennifer Raye Newman (Charlie Clouse) of Bridgewater, VA, Reta Mae (Pluemer) Hefel of Dyersville, IA, Christopher David Pluemer of Osceola, IA, Elizabeth Katherine (Pluemer) Tennison (Zachary Scott Tennison) of Cedar Rapids, IA, Kristen Renee Brown of Highland Ranch, CO, Dustin Aaron Brown (Rachel Archer) of Ottumwa, IA, Erin Nicole Pedrick (Ryan Pedrick) of Keosaqua, IA, Joshua David Newman of Minneapolis, MN, and Jessica Rae Newman-Staubly (Mark McClean Staubly) of Excelsior, MN; great-grandchildren, David Jareth Newman, Lucy Jane Clouse, Ian Jay Edward Puffenbarger, and Thomas James Puffenbarger all of Bridgewater, VA; Jason Michael Hefel, Preston Christopher Hefel, Parker Gerald Hefel, and Elizabeth Mary Hefel all of Dyersville, IA; Olivia Grace Pluemer of Ottumwa, IA; Natalie Noel Tennison, Holly Mae Tennison, Gracyn Elizabeth Tennison, and Owen Michael Tennison all of Cedar Rapids, IA; Keona Leanne Archer of Ottumwa, IA; Hailey Nicole Pedrick and Collin Dean Pedrick of Keosaqua, IA; Ethan Raymond Staubly and Aurora McClean Staubly of Excelsior, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Raymond Stone Broyles of Rapid City, SD; sister, Ellen Lucille Lloyd of Coronado, CA; and her husband, David Clayton Newman.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2017, at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW with burial to follow at Mitchellville Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home prior to the service from 12:00 -2:00 p.m.
