Service Details

Dorothy Anna Crouthamel-McDonough, age 91, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at Trinity Center in Des Moines.

Services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines on Tuesday, January 17, 2017. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with funeral services beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery.

Dorothy was born April 17, 1925, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of August and Mabel (Crist) Steffens. She worked for 19 years at East High School as secretary to the principal. She then went on to serve as Vice President of Hawkeye Bancorporation, from where she retired in 1990. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Tri-T, and National Secretaries Organization. Dorothy loved to play bridge and create craft items. She enjoyed going to Prairie Meadows and traveling. Dorothy was happiest when she was surrounded by and engaging with people.

She is survived by her niece of Des Moines, Barbara Crouthamel; best friend, Sheryl (Dale) Wayman; step-children, Bernie (Twyla) McDonough, Janet (Dwight) Sharp, Danny (Cindy) McDonough, and Gary (Teresa) McDonough; nieces and nephews, Judy Andrews, Janice (Charlie) Head, Eugene (Barbara) Burch, Cathy Flores, Bill (Renee) Burch, and Susan (Steve) Maxwell; numerous step-grand and great-grandchildren; and a host of in-laws, extended family, and friends.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, August and Mabel Steffen; her first husband, Melvin Crouthamel; second husband, Bernard McDonough; and step-grandson, Brandon McDonough.

Memorial contributions may be directed to East High Alumni Association to be used towards scholarships for students.
