Joseph Charles Funaro was born September 12, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa to Charles R. and Theresa M. (Barberio) Funaro. He passed away Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento, California at the age of 69.

Joe was a graduate of Dowling Catholic High School in Des Moines and Simpson College in Indianola where he obtained his BA in Psychology. He also attended St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 – 1969. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. Joe was a Registered Nurse and worked for Sutter General Hospital for 23 years. Prior to that, he was employed as an RN in Minneapolis for ten years. In his free time, Joe enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Ansbro Funaro of Fair Oaks, CA, son, Paul J. Funaro of Sacramento, CA, sister, Nancy (Ron) Phillips of Des Moines, IA, aunt, Josephine Douglas of Windsor Heights, IA, former spouse, Joy Domanico of Sacramento, CA, as well as many grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Theresa Funaro.

Visitation will be held at Hamilton’s Southtown, 5400 SW 9th St, Des Moines from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with Rosary at 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 13, 2017. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Road, Des Moines. Interment of the urn will follow at Glendale Cemetery.
