Service Details

Ralph Glen Ward, 95, died on Sunday August 21, 2016 at Regency Retirement Village in Huntsville, AL. He was born October 6, 1920 to James Leslie and Cora Lena Ward in Des Moines, where he continued to live for most of his life.

Ralph graduated from East High School in 1939 and served in the Navy during WWII. He was a long time member of Staves United Methodist Church and retired from Northwestern Bell Telephone Company after 36 years of service.

Ralph had a knack for being able to do, make, or fix anything, and everything was done to perfection. He even built the home for his family, without any construction experience. His talents and skills were endless, and he enjoyed a wide range of interests. He was an excellent baker, and loved the outdoors, creating many years of wonderful memories of camping and fishing trips.

He will be remembered for his loving and positive spirit, his kindness, and a wonderful sense of humor.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Cynthia Ward da Silva; daughter-in-law, Dolores (Barton) Ward; granddaughter, Julie Howard; and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Arnetta (McGrath) in 1989; son, Robert in 2010; brother, James Leslie II; and his two sisters, Neva Ward and Hazel Jordan.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2016 at Staves United Methodist Church, 2747 E. Madison Avenue, Des Moines, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
