Catherine "Katie" (Renda) Alessio

Katie Alessio passed away November 30, 2015 at Prairie Hills Assisted Living Communities. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2015 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Road, Des Moines, Iowa followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. with the Rosary recited at 6 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa.
Katie was born January 21, 1916 to Thomas and Emma Renda. She graduated from St. Anthony Catholic School in 1931 and St. Joseph Academy in 1935. She married Joseph Alessio on November 22, 1936. Katie went to work part time for H. L. Greens Dime Store and then Younkers for 35 years.
Katie is survived by her children, James (Shirley), Tom (Janet), Emma (Anthony) Madonia, Diane (Norman) Dobson and Helen Alessio; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Webber; and a host of extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Joseph; parents; brothers, Anthony “Toto” Renda and JoJo Renda; and her sister, Mary Talarico.
The family would like to thank the Prairie Hills caregivers for all the special care they gave to Katie and also Dr. Larry Rabang for his loving care throughout many years.
