July 30, 2015
Helen Irene Suckow, 58, of Urbandale, died on Thursday July 30, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 8, at 11 a.m. at New Hope Assembly of God, 4425 70th Street in Urbandale. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m.
Helen was born on October 14, 1956 in Greenfield, Iowa. She was the daughter of Maxine and Glenn DeFord. She was married to Billy Laws for 18 years and they were blessed with three children. She later married Doug Suckow and raised one more child.
Helen touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with. She was an unconditionally loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her family was her passion and her generosity and compassion continue to live in the spirits of those she loved. She had many health challenges towards the end of her life and showed immense strength, courage and faith during it all.
She is survived by her husband, Doug of 16 years; her children, Deanna (Paul) Blocher of Altoona, Missy (Fernando Sheeler) Landrum, Billy (Kristen) Laws of West Des Moines, and Anna (Chad) Behrens of Adel; 13 grandchildren; her sisters, Jolene Lewis and Betty Beveridge of West Des Moines; and her brother, Alan Dean DeFord of Adel.
As a show of sympathy, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to New Hope Assembly of God. Condolences may be expressed online at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

I'm so sad to hear the news of Helen's passing. I've been a patient at WDM Dental Center since I was a young girl. I always loved going in for my appointments and seeing Helen! She was greatly missed when she had to stop working in order to focus on her health. She will continue to be missed. I will always remember her for her kindness and thoughtfulness toward others. She always showed interest in my life and would ask questions about me or my family. I'm sure we were her favorite patients. ;) I'm willing to bet that many people felt that way about her. There's such a freedom in knowing she possessed a strong faith in God... and because of that, there's such a comfort to know that she is with Jesus now. May God give you all peace and comfort now...and wonderful, happy memories of times with Helen. You are in my prayers.

Doug and family, It was with sorrow that I learned first of Helen's illness and now of her passing. We know that for her to depart and be with Jesus is far better because the sufferings of this life are over. I also know that the grief that you bear is a continuation of the sufferings that life on this earth brings. Know this, that the suffering of this life don't compare to the glory that will follow. You now have a treasure in heaven, and where your treasure is there your heart will be also. You are in our prayers.

Doug and family, I am so thankful I got to meet my cousin again many years ago when she came to see my Mom who was her Aunt Juanita and myself when we were visiting our Uncle Lyle and his family. We had fun talking about the time we were all together when we were children. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you now as you deal with the loss of a wonderful wife, mother and friend. I did not know that both of us shared Irene as our middle name from our Aunt Leanna. May God give you comfort and peace that one day we will all see each other again.

I was at Dr Meyer's office today and I learned of Helen's passing. Although I only knew her through the dentist office she was a blessing to offset the dread of getting dental work done. When I saw her outside of the office she always was quick with a smile and took time to chat even though we barely knew each other. Definitely a sign of a wonderful woman! Take Care.
