Beth Gates

Beth Gates, 78, passed away April 26, 2015, at Trinity Center at Luther Park in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on June 24, 1936, to Elmer and Velda Knoedler.

Beth was born and raised in Clarion, and graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in history. She married Freeman Gates on November 28, 1954. She owned and operated Gates Flowers and Gifts for many years and taught numerous classes on creating flower arrangements. Beth opened her home for state childcare, caring for many children throughout the years. Following her husband’s passing in 1997, she moved to Des Moines to be closer to her family.

Beth volunteered much of her time to local hospitals. She was a woman of strong faith and was a member of Cornerstone Family Church. Beth enjoyed hosting family gatherings and always surrounded herself with loved ones.

Beth is survived by her children, Francine (Tony) Prehm and Bradley (Lisa) Gates; daughter-in-law, Betsy Gates; 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Lurretta Knoedler-Daugherty; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Freeman Gates; son, Brian Gates; and 3 brothers.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2015, from 1 to 3 p.m., with a celebration of life service to begin at 3 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines.

Memorial contributions may be directed Cornerstone Family Church to be used in children’s ministries.
