Ellen L. Hitchen

Ellen L. Hitchen, 85, passed away April 20, 2015, at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines, Iowa. She was born in Des Moines on July 24, 1929, to Harry and Esther Brown.

Ellen graduated from North High School. She worked for Northwestern Bell and later met Walter Hitchen. They were united in marriage on November 7, 1947, and made their home in Des Moines. Following their marriage, Ellen devoted herself to her family and home while also operating a successful part-time catering business for many years.

Ellen is survived by her sons, John (Kathy) Hitchen and James (Carol) Hitchen; grandchildren, Jasper Hitchen, Diana Hitchen, Abigail Hitchen, John Hitchen, and Tim Ryen; great-grandson, Jude; brother, Michael (Kathy Wheeldon) Fritz; sister, Sharon (Gary) Carr; and a host of other family and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Jr.; brothers, John Fritz, James Fritz, Keith Fritz, and Harry Brown; as well as her step-father, Paul Fritz.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2015, at the Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.
